What is SSL certificate?
The digital certificate that encrypts traffic to your site and shows the padlock in browsers.
An SSL (more precisely TLS) certificate does two jobs: it encrypts everything between a visitor's browser and your server, and it proves the domain is genuinely yours. Sites with a valid certificate show the padlock and load over https://, while sites without one trigger browser warnings that scare visitors away. Certificates expire on a schedule — typically every 90 days for Let's Encrypt — so they must renew automatically. You can check any domain's certificate issuer and expiry with our free SSL checker.
